After the success of our Easter camp, and given our close proximity to the Pony Club Championships at Cholmondeley, we decided to run a pre-Champs camp this summer as well. Just to push the boat out that bit further, not only were we attempting to run a camp without Barry at the helm, we were also going to do it fully catered…
We had 25 players over three groups, including a large number of new local players and others from as afar afield as Yorkshire and Northern Ireland! Despite a few rain showers in the mornings, we had a great few days. The older members were able to play up with the Celyn A and B graders, while the newer players could practise chukkas on a full-sized pitch (for some this was a first!). We even had a masterclass for parents new to the sport to teach them what would be required at the Championships, along with showing them how to goal judge and do the table.
Our awesome catering team, led by Debbie Pedley, included Rosemary, Carys and Martin, with several of the new parents being drafted in to help in moments of crisis (mainly at breakfast time if Martin wasn’t there – and it must be said, no-one can produce a fry-up on a BBQ quite like him!). The food was a resounding success, especially afternoon tea with hot waffles, syrup and squirty cream!!!
On the last afternoon we ran some fun chukkas, and everyone was feeling confident and ready to move over to the Championship venue the next day. On Friday morning it was an impressive convoy that left Backford!
Many thanks to Tom and his team of coaches (Sarah, Ollie and Anna) for all their hard work over the two days. Thanks also to Debbie, Rosemary, Carys, Martin and Michelle for their work in the catering tent, Area 17 for actually lending us the catering tent, and of course Dave the farmer for hosting us. Thanks also to Max for helping Tom with putting down the pitches at the Championships – maybe next year he will get that trip to Chester Zoo!
Our next camp will be Easter 2015, so watch this space for more details.
